Laurel Green’s Ill-Advised 25 Cryptocurrency Experiment

WARNING: Laurel Green isn’t a financial advisor. Do not listen to any of Laurel’s financial advice, or, really, any of her advice in general. Laurel Green is for entertainment purposes only.

On May 23, 2021, after a week of falling, almost every cryptocurrency, except for the ones tethered to fiat currency (stablecoins like USDT), took yet another huge crash. And, I thought to myself, Laurel, what better time to “buy the dip”? This had to be the floor for the majority of these cryptocurrencies… right? I decided to invest around $20 CAD in 25 different cryptocurrencies and see what happened.

I have never invested ever in my life and I barely understand the blockchain and cryptocurrency. This was obviously a good plan.

So, anyway, here is my portfolio of meme coins and nonsense:

ANKR (ANKR)
  • What is ANKR (ANKR)? – Ankr is a utility token on the Ethereum network that is used to pay for staking and services on the Ankr platform. The Ankr platform is used for deploying blockchain nodes for a cheaper price than on public providers.
  • Why did you buy ANKR (ANKR)? – It might be a disruptive technology. Staking nodes sure sounds disruptive.
  • How much ANKR (ANKR) did you buy? – 164.9 ANKR @ 0.10043 USDT per 1 ANKR or ~16.56091 USDT (~$19.96 CAD)
  • Extra thoughts – The Ankr website mentions web3 all over it which doesn’t actually mean anything specific and I don’t like it.
Cardano (ADA)
  • What is Cardano (ADA)? – Cardano is a decentralized proof-of-stake blockchain platform on the Binance Smart Chain. And then there’s of buzzwords about bringing the power to individuals to enable global change and whatnot.
  • Why did you buy Cardano (ADA)? – Proof-of-stake is supposed to be better for the environment than proof-of-work. It uses much less energy than the Bitcoin blockchain.
  • How much Cardano (ADA) did you buy? – 12.46 ADA @ 0.75076202 USDT per 1 ADA or ~16.5964708 USDT (~$20.00 CAD)
  • Extra thoughts – Do people care enough about the environmental factors to consider Cardano over Ethereum?
Binance Coin (BNB)
  • What is Binance Coin (BNB)? – Binance coin Binance’s very own utility token on their very own Binance Smart Chain. It’s used for paying fees on their cryptocurrency market app.
  • Why did you buy Binance Coin (BNB)? – Unless Binance folds or is regulated out of existence, their cryptocurrency should increase in value as their app gains more users.

Bitcoin (BTC)
  • What is Bitcoin (BTC)? – Bitcoin is the OG proof-of-work blockchain currency. (Not really)
  • Why did you buy Bitcoin (BTC)? – It was a big dip and Bitcoin should keep increasing in price as more people and institutions adopt it. Paypal and credit cards are already allowing things to be payed for with Bitcoin.

  • What is Ethereum (ETH)? – The Ethereum network is Bitcoin’s biggest rival. It’s the main currency that MetaMask uses, and, thus, most application that connect to MetaMask mainly use Ethereum, too. A lot of alternative currencies like BAT run on the Ethereum blockchain. Most NFTs are Ethereum contracts. Ethereum has been claiming that they’re about to transition to proof-of-stake for years.
  • Why did you buy Ethereum (ETH)? – As more people and applications start using Ethereum, the price should keep going up.
  • How much Ethereum (ETH) did you buy? – 0.008 ETH @ 0.00047731 ETH per 1 USDT or ~16.76072 USDT (~$20.20 CAD)

  • What is Monero (XMR)? – Monero is a proof-of-work currency with privacy and anonymity as its highest priorities.
  • Why did you buy Monero (XMR)? – A lot of people like to use cryptocurrency to get up to weird stuff and a privacy-focused currency could prove popular to them, so they can hide their horrible shame.
  • How much Monero (XMR) did you buy? – 0.07352 XMR @ 225.76 XMR per 1 USDT or ~16.5978752 USDT (~$20.00 CAD)
  • Extra thoughts – Newcomers to cryptocurrency may not know this, but blockchains, for the most part, have public ledgers, and anyone with your wallet address can input it into websites like www.blockchain.com/explorer, bscscan.com or etherscan.io and see the transactions you’ve made.

Ripple (XRP)
  • What is Ripple (XRP)? – Ripple is a currency exchange and remittance network that aims to increase the speed and reduce the fees for global money transfers.
  • Why did you buy Ripple (XRP)? – Why are our world’s money transfer systems so old and decrepit? Someone should really do something about that.

Final Extra Thoughts

This is probably a really bad idea. Why are you letting me do this? ALL OF YOU ARE COMPLICIT IN MY DOWNFALL!

Kobo Glo HD Unboxing

And now, because I am bored and I’m waiting for my new gadget to charge, I present to you the unboxing of a Kobo GLo HD e-reader!

a photo of the box a kobo hd glo is shipped in
BOXY!

This is the box that my new Kobo came in. Isn’t that interesting? Isn’t this life-affirming? Aren’t we having fun?

I don’t know why it came with that strange extra-dimensional blur. That must be one of those features that the hipsters these days are crazy for, though.

WARNING! WARNING!

Whatever, bro, I’ll eat as many lithium ion batteries as I want. You’re not my real father. You don’t get to tell me what to do.

Random Crud

They just kind of shoved a few random pieces of foam and cardboard as padding in the box, but it wasn’t near enough, because everything still bounced about inside there like crazy. Plus, the padding was only on one side, leaving the other completely unprotected. So I guess it was lucky that for once FedEx didn’t mangle my package.

IT’S A BOX INSIDE ANOTHER BOX! WHAT IS THIS MADNESS?!

Don’t you just love the graphics on this box? Such blue. Much stylish.

a photo of the back of a kobo glo hd box
Yeah, I’m not going to bother to rotate this.

I’m sure there was some important info on this box, but I didn’t bother reading it.

The man of the hour.

Hey, look, it’s the Kobo Glo HD itself! YAY! It took me three hours to get to this point. Stupid over-packaging. *Harumph*

Kobo Quickstart Guide
More things to read? Why would I ever want to read anything?

They stick the quickstart guide behind the e-reader, but I’ve already started it at that point! You fools!

a photo of a kobo app guide
Even more stuff to read? Bleh.

This told me to download the Kobo app to my phone. I dinnae do it.

a photo of a kobo usb charge cable
Cable was the worst X-Man.

The charge cable didn’t come with a wall adapter. I hate that. How much does a wall adapter cost? Why does everybody make me buy them separately?

Well, that’s everything that came in the box. I’ve wasted a lot of time here and my Kobo still isn’t charged. Why must my obsessive compulsive disorder not allow me to use any new device until it’s fully charged? WHY!?

Square Card Reader

Mysterious Envelope

The other day, I received my Square Card Reader in the mail.

Square is a cell phone peripheral that allows you to receive credit card payments and have them deposited directly into your bank account through a cell phone app.

WHAT’S IN THE BOX!?

They’re currently giving the peripherals away for free, which is nice.

the square card reader's blurb

It doesn’t accept Interac cards. This is bad for Canadians, because a lot of people use Interac debit cards here.

The Square dongle came with stickers. I’m not sure what I’m supposed to stick them to.

the app the runs the square card reader
Square Card Reader App

You just swipe the card through the Square and input the payment amount. There are options within the app for taxes, tipping and signatures.

I’m not sure I have a use for this thing. I don’t, generally, have a need to accept credit card payment when I’m out and about. Anyhoo, it was free, so what do I care?

I would suggest, if you get one of these things, not to keep the dongle in your cell phone. A thief having a credit card reader that’s connected to you is a very bad thing.

Changing a Laptop’s CPU

I own an Acer Aspire 8930G laptop. My particular version of the 8930G, the 8930-6058, came with an Intel Core 2 Duo T5800 processor, which is pretty much the slowest of all the Intel Core 2 Duo processors.

I did not like having a slow processor, so, I decided to switch out my processor for a faster one. I found an Intel Core 2 T9900 on ebay, bought some IC Diamond thermal compound and I was ready to go. I decided to take some pictures of the process, too.

Warning: make sure you know what you’re doing before attempting any hardware kajiggering. You will need to know things about chipsets and unscrewing stuff and junk, in order to switch out a CPU.

This is the CPU upgrade kit I received from the ebay seller. I opted not to use the thermal compound that came with it, instead using IC Diamond thermal compound.

This is a close-up of my new CPU. Isn’t it pretty?

The Access Panel of the Laptop

The first step is to locate your laptop’s access panel. This panel is usually on the back.

Next, carefully removed the screws  holding the access panel in place, exposing the juicy innards of your laptop.

Laptop Fan Removal

You will need to remove the heat sink in order to access the CPU slot, but often the fan will be in the way, so you will have to remove that as well.

a heat sink
Heat Sink

When you are removing the heat sink, don’t force it. It is a very bad thing to bend a heat sink. Once your heat sink is out, it is a good opportunity to clean any dust out of it.

a heat sink with old thermal compound on it
Dirty Heat Sink

Your heat sink will be dirty with old thermal compound. You have to clean the old compound off before applying new compound. The alcohol wipe that came with my upgrade kit was useful for this.

Whenever you remove your heat sink, you should replace the thermal compound. Otherwise, you will probably end up with an incomplete seal and bubble. This will cause your CPU to heat up.

It’s also important to try and make sure you don’t scratch your heat sink when you are cleaning it, because scratches cause air pockets and, thus, incomplete thermal compound seals.

Look, it’s all nice and clean.

Old CPU

Your old CPU will be dirty. You might want to wipe it off while your alcohol wipe is still. A shiny CPU is easier to resell.

To remove the old CPU just turn the screw on the CPU slot to the unlock position and list the CPU out. Don’t force anything. Bent pins are a bad thing.

CPU Slot

Make sure that no debris falls into the holes of the CPU slot, once you remove your old CPU.

a dollop of IC Diamond thermal compound on a cpu
Bead of Thermal Compound

There should be a little arrow on one of the corners of your new CPU. Line this arrow up with the corner of the CPU slot and simply drop the new CPU in. It should go in without any force applied.

Next, you will need to apply new thermal compound. Read the instruction for your thermal compound. Some compound are spread out before replacing the heat sink and other are spread by the application of pressure the heat sink provides. IC Diamond compound uses the compression spread method.

Remember to turn the CPU slot’s screw back to the locked position, before replacing the heat sink.

Finally, replace your heat sink, fan and access panel.

You should turn your laptop on to make sure that the new CPU works. Some thermal compounds recommend leaving your laptop on for a certain amount of time to cure the compound.

There, all done. Enjoy your faster computer.
